Show Synopsis

This groundbreaking musical is about life in Washington Heights, a tight-knit community where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. Rehearsal Information

  • The rehearsal schedule will be created after the show is cast. However, you can take note that we will be rehearsing 3-4 nights per week beginning the week of August 22nd. (Weekend rehearsals may take place in the morning/afternoon.)
  • While you may not be called to every rehearsal, please note that this will be an extensive rehearsal process that will require a strong commitment of time and energy.
  • While rehearsals will be scheduled around cast conflicts, we will not be casting anyone with a significant amount of conflicts between August 22nd and October 23rd.

  • Audition appointments are required. Walk-ins are welcome, but they will be seen after the scheduled appointments. Please sign-up for an appointment.

What You Need for the Audition

  • Please bring your headshot and resume with you to the audition.
  • Please prepare 32 bars of a contemporary musical theatre piece. Please bring sheet music in the proper key. An accompanist is provided.
  • If you have rap skills and wish to be considered for a character who raps (Usnavi, Benny, Sonny, Graffiti Pete), please prepare a short bit of rapping to be done when your singing audition is complete. (No sheet music required for rap section of audition. Yes, you may rap from the show, or from ‘HAMILTON’.)
  • After everyone in your group sings, there will be a short dance audition. If you are only auditioning to be a Pit Singer, you are not required to dance.

What We’re Casting

All roles are open. There are no pre-cast roles. We are casting ALL ETHNICITIES. Once again, we are casting ALL ETHNICITIES. 

  • Female Characters
    • Nina Rosario – ?Daughter of Kevin & Camila Rosario, freshman at Stanford University. Very bright, sweet, feels that she has let everyone down because she’s dropping out of college. High belter (to F5); no required dancing.
    • Vanessa – Usnavi’s love interest. Works at the neighborhood hair salon, wants to get out of the barrio, worldly and urban. Must be a strong dancer, high belter (to E5).
    • Camila Rosario – Nina’s mom. Co-owner of Rosario’s Car & Limosine, determined to keep the family together, stands up to Kevin, she is the glue of the family, straight talker. Spanish speaking a plus. Strong singer-belter (G3-B4). No required dancing.
    • Abuela Claudia – Raised Usnavi and Sonny. Grand-matriarch of the entire community. Spanish speaking a plus. Belter (F#3 to C5). No required dancing.
    • Daniela – Salon owner. Brash. Spanish speaking a plus. Singer-belter. (G3 to C5).
    • Carla – Hairdresser that works at neighborhood salon. Sidekick to Daniela. Ditzy. Spanish speaking a plus.
  • Male Characters
    • Usnavi – Owner of De la Vega’s Bodega (corner store). Has a thing for Vanessa, driver of the story. Rapper/singer, high baritone/tenor (to G4). No required dancing.
    • Benny – Works at Rosario’s Car & Limousine. Strong actor, dreaming through Nina. Rapper/singer, baritone (to E4). No required dancing.
    • Kevin Rosario – Nina’s dad. Co-owner of Rosario’s Car & Limousine, strong actor, dreaming through Nina. Singer, baritone (to E4). No required dancing. Spanish speaking a plus.
    • Sonny – Usnavi’s younger cousin. Works at bodega, aggressive, charming. Rapper/singer, tenor (to Bb4).
    • Piragua Guy – Neighborhood ice man. Tenor with extensive singing (must have sustainable A4). Cameo role. Age not defined. Spanish speaking a plus. Dancing not necessarily required.
    • Graffiti Pete – Local graffiti artist. Ghetto talk, must have “swag”. STRONG HIP HOP DANCER, rapper/singer. Spanish speaking a plus.
  • Ensemble
    • We are looking for a group of 10-12 balanced M/F dancers and singers between the age of 18-45. MUST BE DANCERS/SINGERS. Will dance in multiple styles – hip hop, latin, ect. Very active ensemble in several LARGE numbers.
  • Pit Singers
    • Looking for 4-8 balanced M/F singers to support the dancers performing on stage. Will sit with the orchestra and sing the show’s ensemble sections. ?STRONG SINGERS REQUIRED.
