Audition Prep

All roles are open and all ages are encouraged to audition.

  • ALAN – nephew of Barnaby, brother of Jane: male, younger-looking adult, comic romantic lead who cracks a lot of jokes, wears some outrageous costumes and somehow manages a happy ending with Contrary Mary.
  • JANE – niece of Barnaby, sister of Alan: female, younger-looking adult, comic romantic lead who cracks a lot of jokes, wears some outrageous costumes and somehow manages a happy ending with Tom Tom (SOPRANO)
  • BARNABY – A rich miser, uncle to Alan and Jane: male, older-looking adult, our villainous villain; think Snidley Whiplash, Dirk Dastardly, Boris Badenov…the kind of fellow who’d tie a damsel in distress onto a railroad track
  • RODERIGO & GONZORGO – two ruffians who do (mis)deeds for Barnaby: traditionally males, any age, reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy, slightly villainous but mostly comic buffoons who sort of look like Stan and Ollie
  • THE WIDOW PIPER – a  widow with 14 children: female, older-looking adult (she didn’t adopt those children!)
  • TOM TOM – Widow Piper’s son: male, young-looking adult, comedic romantic lead, beloved of Jane (BARITONE)
  • CONTRARY MARY – gardener: female, younger-looking adult, comedic romantic lead, beloved of Alan(SOPRANO)
  • HILDA – the Widow Piper’s maid: traditionally female, older looking adult
  • MASTER TOYMAKER – traditionally male, older-looking adult, genial fellow who means well, but unfortunately has a Really Bad Idea That Causes Trouble
  • GRUMIO – Toymaker’s apprectice – traditionally male, younger-looking adult, comedic goofball who helps Alan and Jane get out of assorted scrapes (BARITONE)
  • INSPECTOR MARMADUKE – of the Toyland Police – traditionally male, older-looking adult, classic clueless comedic detective, think Inspector Clousseau and you’re on the right track

NURSERY RHYME CHARACTERS & OTHER ENSEMBLE CHARACTERS: Girls, boys, men and women:  Mother Goose Land and Toyland are filled with lots of colorful characters; some with speaking parts, others who sing and dance. These could include Little Bo-Peep, Peter, Tommy Tucker, Sallie Waters, Jack & Jill, Little Miss Muffet, Curly Locks, Red Riding Hood, Bobby Shaftoe, Simple Simon, Little Boy Blue, a Spider, a Moth Queen, Benevolent Spirits and even SANTA CLAUS!
